Scleral Lenses

Scleral lenses are large diameter lenses, made of highly oxygen permeable material that rest on the sclera (the white part of the eye). They do not touch the cornea (the central transparent part of the eye), but vault over it. This creates a space between the lens and the cornea, which is a fluid-filled reservoir covering the sensitive cornea. The fluid-filled reservoir neutralizes the irregularity of the cornea, which offers amazing potential for vision restoration when others lens options fail. The fluid-filled reservoir also bathes the sensitive cornea. Due to this therapeutic effect, scleral lenses reduce or eliminate eye pain, photophobia, or any discomfort due to blinking. Scleral lenses are very stable, comfortable, do not pop out or dislodged. They can be life changing for patients due to the restorative potential for vision and eye comfort.

Who can benefit from scleral lenses?

There are two groups that can greatly benefit from the use of scleral lenses.

The first group of patients are patients who have irregular cornea, especially the ones with extreme severity. These patients suffer from symptoms such as extremely blurry vision, glare, halo, double vision, and difficulties with focusing. These irregular corneal conditions include but not limited to the following:

  • Keratoconus
  • Pellucid Marginal Degeneration
  • Post CXL
  • Post-Intacs
  • Post Corneal Transplant
  • Post-Lasik
  • Post-PRK
  • Post-RK

The second group of patients are patients who have severe ocular surface diseases. Their eyes can be uncomfortable, painful, extremely light sensitive, sandy, and scratchy. The discomfort of the eyes can lead to other symptoms such as headache, and can be detrimentally impact the quality of life. These conditions include but not limited to the following:

  • Moderate to Severe Dry Eye
  • Sjogren’s Syndrome
  • GVHD
  • Neurotrophic Keratitis
  • Severe Corneal Scars and Opacities due to previous infection or trauma
  • Steven Johnson Syndrome
  • Eye pain due to Eyelid Abnormalities
